Safe Kids® Upstate, led by Greenville Hospital System Children's Hospital, is
an injury prevention coalition with more than 70 community partners who join together
to prevent childhood injuries and deaths in upstate South Carolina. Safe Kids
Upstate plans community events and educational programs focusing on many safety
initiatives: Car Seat Safety, School Safety, Home Safety, Bicycle Safety, Pedestrian
Safety, Fire Safety, Water Safety, and Sports Safety. Because of high public
demand for our programs, we are now in three counties: Greenville, Pickens, and
Oconee.
The fact is ... since Safe Kids Upstate began
- A dramatic 24% decline in accidental deaths has occurred in Greenville County
among children under age 15
- More than 15,000 bike helmets and 1,600 car seats have been provided to needy
families
- Have educated more than 65,000 children on fire prevention and safety
- More than 2,000 life-saving devices (smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, carbon
monoxide detectors, etc.) have been distributed
- More than 2,500 school safety patrols have been trained and equipped
- More than 3,000 Sports Injury Guides have been given to coaches, athletic trainers, and parents, along with 13,000
mouth guards
- Many national and local awards have been won: National SAFE KIDS Coalition (2002),
National SAFE KIDS Event of the Year for SAFE KIDS Fest 2002, Telly Award for
Congratulations, You're a Safety Patrol training video (2005), just to name a few
